2006 BIG ROCK BLOCK CABERNET
SAUVIGNON
Big
Rock Block is named after a huge boulder that dominated
the hillside behind the old prune barn that was
converted into Robert Young Estate Winery. The big rock
was removed from the hillside with dynamite and big
bulldozers leaving a slope that has areas of red clay,
subsurface smaller rock and gravel, and volcanic
material. The vines in this area are stressed and the
grape crops small. It is a perfect place to grow
Cabernet Sauvignon because the site lowers the vigor of
a varietal that can grow aggressively and develop
vegetative components in the grapes if the vines are
left alone on a fertile soil. The 2006 Big Rock Block is
94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot aged in 30% new French oak
barrels. The wine is full of blackberry and plum flavors
with notes of herbal spices, pepper and a hint of
chocolate. Six barrels (145 cases) were made. Price $58
per bottle.
