Robert Young Estate Winery Merlot Vines
Merlot is a fickle and finicky grape. Jim Young believes the success of his 80 acres of Merlot is due in part to the very warm days and very cool nights in the eastern hills of Alexander Valley, and due in part to farming techniques.

2006 ALEXANDER VALLEY MERLOT

Once again Robert Young Estate Merlot was cultivated on a section of the Robert Young Estate way up the hillside behind the main house where crop yields are extremely low, producing grapes of intense flavor. Jim Young sent his men up the hill a dozen times in 2006 to carefully manage the Merlot crop. They stripped leaves from around the clusters to allow the sunlight to filter in on the grapes and ripen them properly. The crew dropped bunches of grapes in some rows to give the vines a manageable amount of fruit to ripen to match the year’s several periods of cool weather. In the end, the moderate load of very small berries on the Merlot vines in 2006 ripened fully and produced the set of concentrated black fruit flavors and ample soft tannins for which Robert Young Estate Merlot is noted. This is a hearty Merlot.
